Organic Seed Trainings and Tasting Event on Orcas Island
Organic seed focused day for islanders to be held September 22, 2015

Eastsound, WA – Organic Seed Alliance (OSA), in partnership with Greenbank Farm, Washington State University, Orcas Food Co-op, and Hogstone’s Wood Oven, will host a day of organic seed events on Orcas Island on September 22, 2015. The day will include both an on-farm variety trial training for farmers and agricultural professionals, and a tasting event for farmers, researchers, chefs, value-added producers, and organic retailers.

On-Farm Variety Trials Training | Orcas Food Co-op | 1:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The event day will begin with OSA’s on-farm variety trial training. Participants will learn how to identify the best performing organic varieties available for their local growing conditions. This course provides training in basic on-farm experimental design, as well as the tools to efficiently and effectively plan, manage, and evaluate a variety trial and use trial results.

The event will run from 1:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Participants will meet at the Orcas Food Co-op located at 138 North Beach Road in Eastsound, Washington, at 1:15 p.m. for the classroom portion and carpool to the field portion afterwards.

Register for the on-farm variety trials training at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NXLH5F8.

This portion of the day is intended for farmers and agricultural students. Prior experience in basic farming is recommended. Participants are encouraged to review OSA’s online tutorials on seed saving and production before the course. These resources can be found at http://seedalliance.org/publications.

Organic Variety Tasting Social | Hogstone’s Wood Oven | 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Farmers, researchers, chefs, value-added producers, and organic retailers are invited to an organic variety tasting social after the afternoon training. Participants will taste organic vegetable varieties from OSA’s research fields and discuss organic variety development in the San Juans. Jay Blackinton of Hogstone’s Wood Oven will prepare dishes highlighting up-and-coming organic varieties, including kale, onions, colored carrots, and striped peppers. The tasting social will be held at Hogstone’s Wood Oven located at 460 Main Street in Eastsound, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Events will take place regardless of the weather and participants are encouraged to dress appropriately.

These events are being offered free of charge in partnership with Greenbank Farm thanks to support from the Washington State Department of Agriculture Specialty Crop Block Grant Program and United States Department of Agriculture, National Institute of Food and Agriculture Award number 2011-51300-3093 of the OREI.
