Organic acreage in the Intermountain West continues to increase alongside the national demand for organic food. For example, in a five-year period, organic vegetable acreage in Montana experienced a five-fold increase. Although the organic seed trade is growing, the supply is still insufficient to fully meet the diverse and regional needs of all growers — including farmers in the Intermountain West.

Missoula, MT – Organic Seed Alliance (OSA) announced today the release of organic seed production and handling resources for Montana specialty crop seed growers. The resources walk growers through best practices for producing vegetable crop seed using organic practices and for handling the seed they sell commercially.

Senate Bill 155 is part of a national strategy to eliminate the authority of local government over one of our most valuable natural resources: seed. The bill restricts Montana farmers’ control over seed through a top-down corporate solution in search of a problem.

Dave Victor, the farm director at Garden City Harvest’s Orchard Gardens Neighborhood Farm and a new father, has a bushy red beard and a straw sunhat. His hands are tanned and calloused.
