We’re happy to highlight our business member of the month: The Good Seed Company, based in Whitefish, Montana. This growing cadre of gardeners and farmers is committed to rebuilding their community’s storehouse of seeds. The company started almost 40 years ago as a single family growing its food ecologically and saving seeds from plants that did well in their zone in the Okanagan Highlands of northeastern Washington.

RMA Announces New Cooperative Agreements for Risk Management Programs
Organic Seed Alliance to Provide Training to Farmers Across the Country

Port Townsend, WA – USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) recently awarded 52 cooperative agreements under the Risk Management Education Partnerships Program totaling approximately $4.8 million. This includes nine first-time award recipients and 10 national projects that involve multiple RMA regions.

Registration Now Open for Montana Seed Trainings

OSA is leading two hands-on trainings in Montana next month focused on seed harvesting, handling, and quality. The first event will teach organic specialty crop producers and experienced seed savers how to improve the quality of the seed they grow. The second event will teach farmers hands-on methods for improving their seed cleaning skills. Space is limited so interested participants are encouraged to register early. Both events are free.

New Report Describes Organic Seed Needs for Montana

We’re happy to announce the release of our most recent regional seed needs assessment. This new report details the organic seed needs of vegetable growers in Montana. The findings are based on a statewide survey conducted earlier this year as part of a bigger project to advance collaborative research, education, and outreach that results in more organic seed options for Montana’s growers.

Organic acreage in Montana continues to increase alongside the national demand for organic products.

Montana Organic Seed Assessment: Vegetables

The report includes findings from a statewide survey conducted in 2016 on organic vegetable production in Montana. The survey captured challenges growers face in sourcing organic seed and asked them to identify vegetable crops in need of improvement, including desirable traits.

Montana Organic Seed Workshop to be Held Dec. 3

OSA is leading a workshop for specialty crop growers interested in learning how to conduct organic variety trials on their farm. The workshop is offered as part of the Montana Organic Association’s annual conference on December 3, 2015, at the Holiday Inn in Bozeman, MT, and is co-sponsored by Lake County Community Development Corporation in Ronan, MT.

The instructor, OSA’s Steve Peters, has extensive experience in organic research, including past work at the Rodale Institute and Seeds of Change.

Learn How to Breed Crops for Organic Agriculture

The Northern Organic Vegetable Improvement Collaborative (NOVIC) will host a two-day classroom and field based course on plant breeding next month. Nationally renowned plant breeders from University of Wisconsin, Cornell University, Oregon State University, and Organic Seed Alliance will lead a Fundamentals of On-Farm Plant Breeding course at Colorado State University on September 11-12, 2015. Participants will learn basic principles to evaluate, develop, improve, and maintain plant varieties for their farm. Instruction will include how to conduct variety trials,

Taking Seed Production to the Next Level in Montana

OSA will lead a course next month in conjunction with the Montana Organic Association’s annual conference. The course will take place on December 12, 2013, at the Flathead Valley Community College in Kalispell.

OSA’s senior scientist, Dr. John Navazio, who also serves as the Extension’s organic seed specialist at Washington State University, will teach the course.

Participants will learn how to strengthen their specialty crop seed production skills and how to adapt varieties to their farms.

Forging the Future of Seed in Montana

In Montana, a group of farmers are addressing their seed availability concerns head-on. Their goal: to build a reliable supply of open-pollinated varieties of various crops that are well-adapted to Montana’s climate. A seed cooperative is in the works.
