Experts from across the country will provide insight into many of today’s environmental issues – and offer solutions – at the Mother Earth News Fair June 4-5 at the Puyallup Fairgrounds.
Ed Begley Jr., actor, activist and author, has served on the Environmental Media Association and the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. Live Simply So That Others Can Simply Live details the changes he has made to “green” his life and shows how others can do the same by finding environmentally friendly resources and communities. The keynote is presented by Envirolet.
Joel Salatin is a third-generation organic farmer and author whose family owns and operates Polyface Farm in Virginia, which features prominently in the New York Times best-seller The Omnivore’s Dilemma and the award-winning documentary Food, Inc. Salatin will present Ballet in the Pasture, a virtual tour of his farm that explains how pastured livestock systems function in an environmental and economic context.
Mark Musick helped found the regional Tilth movement in the mid-1970s, farmed in Snohomish County for 10 years, served as the Pike Place Market farm specialist and now assists with farm-to-school marketing. His keynote, Everyone Eats, will teach attendees about the organic food movement in the Pacific Northwest.
Dan Chiras, Ph.D., is a visiting professor of environmental science at Colorado College, author of 30 books and director of The Evergreen Institute in east-central Missouri. Chiras discusses how our reactions to global climate change and energy shortage challenges will determine our success as a species in The Monkey Trap.
Bryan Welch is a Kansas farmer, author and the publisher of Ogden Publications, the largest media company serving the sustainability community. Welch’s keynote draws on ideas and themes from his book Beautiful and Abundant, which focuses on sustainability and its connection with the future of humanity. “Once the human imagination visualizes a brilliant future, the human intellect can achieve what previously seemed impossible,” says Welch.
Mark Kastel is co-founder of the Cornucopia Institute, a progressive farm policy research group based in Cornucopia, Wis., that promotes economic justice for family-scale farmers and protects market access to authentic food for consumers. Kastel’s two keynotes, The Competitive Environment in Direct Marketing and The Agribusiness Takeover of the Good Food Movement, will cover farm-centric marketing and how consumers can protect themselves and the “good food movement” from big business.
Doc and Connie Hatfield have owned and operated a 400 mother-cow desert ranch in Brothers, Ore., since 1976, and were in charge of Country Natural Beef’s marketing for its first 22 years. The Hatfields’ keynote will discuss the Country Natural Beef practice “Graze Well,” which includes seven self-designed principles that lead to decisions for the long-term health of the land rather than short-term gain.
Micaela Colley, executive director of the Organic Seed Alliance and chair of the Organic Seed Growers Conference, manages plant breeding, research and education projects with farmers, researchers and other seed professionals. Save Our Seed! will discuss growing and stewarding heirloom seeds.
