Let’s Hang Out: Upcoming Organic Seed Events in California

We know it’s a busy time of year (my goodness, WHAT are we going to do with all of these zucchini?!) but take a minute and mark your calendar to join us for these upcoming organic seed events throughout California.

Exhibit with OSA at The National Heirloom Expo

September 5-7, 2017 | Santa Rosa, California

Are you thinking of heading to The National Heirloom Expo in Santa Rose on September 5-7, 2017? We’ll be there and we’re inviting California growers to exhibit at our booth varieties that you have been producing for seed and/or produced as part of an on-farm breeding project. Take part in this cool opportunity to shine a light on the important work of California seed producers and breeders by showcasing these varieties and sharing the rich stories behind them. Interested? Contact Amber Keeney ASAP as space is limited.

Organic Breeding and Seed Intensive

August 10, 2017 | Davis, California | $25 for intensive and lunch

Learn how to develop new varieties and produce commercial quality seed. Join Jared Zystro of Organic Seed Alliance, and Julie Dawson and Bill Tracy of University of Wisconsin-Madison for this one-day intensive that includes instruction on planning for successful seed production, harvesting and cleaning seed, managing population size and isolation distances, conducting variety trials, and understanding on-farm breeding techniques. Register today

Field Day with Rio Del Rey Heirloom Beans

September 13, 2017 | Valley Center, California | Free

Rio Del Rey‘s Mike Reeske will take us on a tour of their farm’s heirloom bean trials during this field day. We’ll also learn about organic seed production and see thresher and seed cleaning demos. Afterwards, we’ll socialize and share lunch at The Yellow Deli. Want to know more? Contact Amber Keeney.

Organic Seed Production Workshop and Field Day

September 24, 2017 | Red Bluff, California | Free or $15 for workshop and lunch

Want to learn organic seed production basics? Join OSA and Elliot Proffitt of Red Gate Ranch for this field day and workshop. 4th Annual California Organic Seed Summit

March 2-4, 2018 | Petaluma, California | Price TBD

Save the date to join us for the 4th annual California Organic Seed Summit. This retreat is a unique opportunity to network, exchange knowledge, and develop collective actions to build sustainable, profitable, and resilient seed systems in California. Each year’s summit is molded by the participants and produces an important springboard for the upcoming year. The event is invitation-only and registration will open in the autumn of 2017.
