Seed Digest (February 5-18, 2011)

OSA Publishes State of Organic Seed OSA released an extensive report that serves as the first comprehensive analysis of the challenges and opportunities in building the organic seed sector.

Save the Date! Mother Earth News’ Fair in Washington State OSA will host seed workshops and a seed swap at the Mother Earth News fair June 4 – 5, 2011. There will be a live auction with proceeds benefiting OSA — stay tuned for more details.

Remember StarLink? USDA just announced its approval of a genetically engineered (GE) corn trait that is unique from other GE traits on the market: it’s engineered specifically for ethanol production. Once again, no independent study on environmental and food safety impacts was conducted.

OGC CEO Asks Obama for Common Sense Principles This letter is re-printed with permission by the CEO of Organically Grown Company in Clackamas, Oregon, the largest wholesaler of organic produce in the Pacific Northwest.

Associated Press: Experts Say Alfalfa Contamination Certain In an earlier version of this article, OSA was misquoted as saying that farmers planting GE crops should pay for damages resulting from contamination. That is not our organization’s stance. We do not support pitting farmer against farmer. Instead, OSA believes strongly that patent holders should be held liable for costs resulting from contamination.

Seed Sovereignty Declaration Watch this inspiring video that features students at Peñasco Middle School and Roots and Wings Charter School reading the Declaration of Seed Sovereignty in 2010.
