Farmers who save and improve seed are innovators in their own right. Their seed decisions impact the quality of the food we eat, the health of our environment, and the diversity of seed available for future generations.
Yet too much of our seed is owned and managed by a handful of chemical and biotechnology companies with no interest in the role farmers play in saving and improving seed — farmers like Theresa and Dan Podoll of Prairie Road Organic Seed.
“The changes in the seed industry have included dramatic consolidation and monopolistic control,” says Theresa. “This trend strikes a devastating blow to the biodiversity of our food and agriculture system, and narrows seed diversity. Our seed system is ecologically brittle.”
Theresa says these challenges present an opportunity — and as a seed steward, an imperative — to act. When she’s not in the field, she’s weighing in on critical policy issues that impact our seed future.
Organic Seed Alliance believes the best way to protect and expand seed diversity is to put seed into the hands of farmers. This is how we reverse seed industry consolidation. This is how we build power to influence critical seed policy from the farm field up.
OSA is committed to advocating for policies and actions that help deliver the seed we need — seed developed for organic production systems and in partnership with farmers.
Please donate today, at whatever amount you can afford. Help us grow the diversity of seed and seed stewards. Thank you for your support!
