How You Can Help Farmers and Farmworkers Affected by Fires

Our hearts are heavy knowing that so many of our Pacific Northwest and California seed growers are being affected by the fires on the West Coast. We put together this list of resources for folx looking for ways to support farmers and farmworkers whose lives and livelihoods are threatened by ongoing fires in the region. Thanks to Culinary Breeding Network for putting together several of these resources. If you have additional resources to share, please email them to Cathleen McCluskey.

Farmer and Farmworker Fire Relief Resources

CalFarmFund Farmworker Project Fire Relief – In response to the series of fires in California starting August 18, 2020, the farmworker project is collecting donations. 100% of these donations will go directly to farmworkers through supplies, redistribution of funds to farmworker families in need, and to wage replacement for farmworkers who are deciding whether they want to work in these conditions.

CASA of Oregon – CASA of Oregon works alongside community organizations to provide programs and resources that strengthens families’ financial well-being.

CCOF Resources – CCOF has an extensive list of resources to support farmers affected by California fires.

Central Valley, CA Crowdsourcing – Central Valley community members are maintaining this list of crowdsourcing sites for farms, families, and individuals affected by the fires

Community Alliance with Family Farmers – CAFF has published disaster recovery resources for farmers.

Cowgirls 911 – This Facebook group is coordinating animal evacuation and assistance.

Face masks for Farmworkers Now! — Every dollar from this GoFundMe site goes toward ensuring that farmworkers have access to protective face masks during the unprecedented air pollution caused by the wildfires.

Navigating Disaster Assistance for Farmers — This great resource walks farmers through disaster assistance programs.

Our Family Farms – Our Family Farms is organizing donations to provide shelter assistance to farmworker families affected by the fires.

Portland CSA – This is a GoFundMe site for small Oregon farms affected by the fires.

UNETE Immigrant Fire Relief Fund – The UNETE Center for Farmworker and Immigrant Advocacy has launched a fire relief fund that will distribute money directly to families for basic needs like food, gas and other essentials in response to the complications surrounding the recent fires in Jackson County, OR. They are also assisting families with navigating community resources. Many immigrant families have been displaced and their homes have been completely destroyed.

Prevention Resources for Farmers

Community Alliance with Family Farmers – Resources for farmers to help them prepare for disasters.

Farmers Build Fire Resilience Online Course – A hybrid online course and network dedicated to helping farmers and ranchers face a future of fire.
