Regional adapted seed is a critical component of creating a resilient food system. The Midwest is a key agricultural region, but its unique climate presents challenges for seed savers. To help growers succeed, the Organic Seed Alliance and partners have published a new guide, “Climatic Considerations and Risks for Seed Production in the Midwest.”
This publication explores how climate and geography affect seed crops, and provides an in-depth description of climatic and geographic features that impact the ability to produce high quality seeds in the Midwest. The guide offers practical advice on how to:
- Choose the right crops and varieties for your area
- Manage environmental conditions to protect your seed crops
- Prevent seed-borne diseases
The guide also includes case studies from Midwestern seed growers who share their experiences and tips for success.
