The USP team is looking for a mid-level experienced farmer that is interested in learning more about seed production and helping with daily farm tasks. Ideally, this is someone who is already passionate about farming but has an additional interest in seed production, breeding/selection, or variety trialing. A typical day would be outside, assisting farm managers Leeza and LuAnna on our human-powered (no-till) farm. Tasks would include preparing beds, mulching, planting, weeding, etc. Most of the work would be associated with your typical mixed vegetable farm, but in the late summer, attention shifts more towards seed harvesting and processing. There is also the chance to assist in farm crop trials and some of our breeding work. You will leave this position feeling ready to begin taking on your own seed growing contracts.
The ideal candidate will have:
At least 1 year of experience in sustainable vegetable production.
A cooperative mindset. Must be energetic, communicative, focused, and a team player.
Be willing to work in all weather conditions– rain, cold, heat, and freezing temperatures.
The ability to lift and carry 40 pounds for 50 feet.
The ability to work efficiently.
Desire to work with seeds.
