OSA is collaborating with universities and organic farmers to address Downy Mildew pressure on cucurbits in the eastern part of the US. The project takes a participatory plant breeding approach and spans five states (New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama) and includes three universities (Cornell, Auburn, and North Carolina State). Michael Mazourek of Cornell is the project lead and recently published variety trial reports for 2014 and 2015 on eOrganic.

OSA and Cornell University will host an evaluation field day of melons, cucumbers, and summer squash varieties at Ramblerill Farm in southern Orange County, North Carolina, on August 11, 2016. The field day will highlight cucurbit varieties that have shown resistance to Downy Mildew over the last three years of the Eastern Sustainable Organic Cucurbit (ESOCuc) research project. Helping growers identify appropriate varieties is key to increasing the production and profitability of organic cucurbits across the region.

RMA Announces New Cooperative Agreements for Risk Management Programs
Organic Seed Alliance to Provide Training to Farmers Across the Country
Port Townsend, WA – USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) recently awarded 52 cooperative agreements under the Risk Management Education Partnerships Program totaling approximately $4.8 million. This includes nine first-time award recipients and 10 national projects that involve multiple RMA regions.
